NASHUA, N.H. (AP) – New Hampshire environmental officials say that a weekend fire at a former tannery in Nashua did not release asbestos into the surrounding neighborhood.
Debris from the fire at Mohawk Tannery on Saturday was sent flying into the neighborhood, landing on yards and houses.
Investigators said that the fire appears to be arson.
The former business had been an Environmental Protection Agency cleanup site for about two years, and officials believed the section that burned might have contained asbestos.
The state Department of Environmental Services said Monday that none of the debris samples tested positive for asbestos fibers.
Four air samples were also collected, and only one showed a very low level of asbestos, well below the normal screening level.
