ACUSHNET, Mass. (AP) – Police have arrested an Acushnet man on a charge that he killed his estranged wife 21 years ago, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Robert Roy, 44, was taken into custody without incident and will be arraigned Wednesday in New Bedford District Court, Bristol District Attorney Sam Sutter said in a statement.

His wife, Marni Roy, was 19 when she disappeared while walking her dog in on March 4, 1986, in Acushnet, the district attorney said.

Her skeletal remains were discovered four years later by recreational divers in a privately owned quarry in Dartmouth – tied and weighted down by cinder blocks, The Standard-Times of New Bedford reported.

A telephone listing for Roy could not immediately be found. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.

Police interviewed Roy at the time his wife went missing, the newspaper said. He later moved to Florida. In 1990, then-Bristol County District Attorney Ronald Pina said authorities intended to charge a suspect, but no one was charged then, the newspaper reported, citing its archives.
