BAGHDAD (AP) – A U.S. soldier stationed in Iraq has been convicted of having child pornography on his computer and sentenced to 18 months confinement along with a bad conduct discharge, the military said Sunday.

Army Sgt. Angel D. Escobales, 38, of New Britain, Conn., pleaded guilty to wrongfully possessing 12 videos of child pornography on his personal laptop and wrongfully possessing adult pornography in violation of a general order, a statement said.

Escobales, who was assigned to the 144th Military Police Company, 97th Military Policy Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, was convicted during a court-martial on Oct. 9 at the Anaconda base, about 50 miles north of Baghdad.

He faced one charge of possession of child pornography and another charge of possession of pornography in violation of a general order.

Members of his unit had discovered child pornography on his computer at a forward operating base in July.

A military judge convicted and sentenced Escobales to 18 months confinement, reduction to the grade of private and ordered that he receive a bad conduct discharge.
