BOSTON (AP) – Having the safest roads in the nation isn’t good enough for the state’s highway commissioner. Luisa Paiewonsky is working to make driving even safer.
A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Massachusetts has the lowest rate of traffic-related deaths in the country.
The report says the state had an average of 7.7 traffic deaths per 100,000 residents from 1999 to 2004, the most recent year for which statistics are available. That’s nearly half the national rate.
Paiewonsky says the state is working hard to promote highway safety and the goal is cut the traffic fatality rate by 20 percent by 2010.
The report also says Massachusetts has the nation’s lowest rate of accidental deaths overall.
