HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – The state Supreme Court on Monday denied a motion to postpone Bridgeport’s mayoral election today.

But the matter may not be settled.

According to court documents, the justices will hear an appeal on Nov. 30 from state Rep. Christopher Caruso, the mayoral candidate who sought the delay because of alleged voting irregularities in the Democratic primary. Caruso lost the September primary to state Sen. Bill Finch by 270 votes out of about 9,000 cast.

The justices could order a new primary if they believe it’s warranted. “The highest court in the state feels there’s merit in our appeal, so they’re going to have an expedited hearing,” Caruso said. “Today, they could have just outright dismissed us. That’s very telling.”

The high court’s written order shows that appeals by Caruso and City Council candidate Toyka Simmons-Cook, a member of Caruso’s slate who lost the same Sept. 11 Democratic primary by two votes, have been assigned docket numbers.

If elected, Finch would take office Dec. 1. Incumbent Mayor John Fabrizi did not seek re-election.
