NASHUA, N.H. (AP) – Six years ago, three former Digital employees started a computer storage networking company in an attic in Mont Vernon. It was April Fools Day, but their company, EqualLogic, is no joke.

Dell, the computer company, is buying it for $1.4 billion.

Co-founders Paula Long, Peter Hayden and Paul Koning say their company is all about simplifying the experience of owning and operating data storage systems for computers. EqualLogic’s technology links storage computers so they operate as a single device, making it much easier and faster to find files.

The companies announced the acquisition on Monday. It should be completed late this year or early next year.

Dell says it plans to keep EqualLogic in Nashua, continue using the EqualLogic name and retain the company’s management team. EqualLogic has about 384 employees worldwide, with about 225 in New Hampshire. The company has 3,200 customers in more than 30 countries.

“The running joke when we got started is we started in my attic at my house, which is on Purgatory Road, and we started on April’s Fools Day,” Hayden said.

“Since then, we have shipped countless versions of the product, have 3,200 customers, 480 channel partners, and we have customers in over 30 countries,” he said.
