WARWICK, R.I. (AP) – The parents of a woman who died while scuba diving in the Caribbean in 1999 say they’re grateful that her husband has been charged in the death.

David Swain, a former Jamestown town council member, was arrested Wednesday on charges that he killed his wife, Shelley Tyre, while they were scuba diving off Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

Island authorities are seeking Swain’s extradition. Swain has adamantly denied any wrongdoing but was found responsible for her death in a civil trial last year.

Tyre’s mother, Lisa Tyre, says it took a long time for Swain to be charged with a crime, but she’s grateful that it’s happened.

A lawyer for Tyre’s parents has alleged that Swain killed his wife for money.
