LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) – Authorities will seek charges against six boys aged 10 to 15 in connection with a four-alarm fire that gutted an historic hall in Lawrence.

The fire damaged the 141-year-old Turn Hall on January 13. The hall had once been a cultural center for German immigrants.

The property had been purchased just six days before the fire by a church group that planned to renovate the building.

Police chief John Romero said the boys set several small fires inside the building, which had been vacant for years.

Romero said the mistakenly boys thought they’d put out all the fires.

Fire Lt. Paul Reitano said charges were brought only to get the boys into a program that teaches young offenders about the dangers of fire.
