SOUTH PORTLAND – Adam Wilding, 21, of Lewiston captured the Men’s Singles championship in the 39th annual A&J Open Tennis Tournament played over the weekend at South Portland High School.

The A&J is the first of four major outdoor tournaments sanctioned by the Maine Tennis Association.

Wilding, seeded second and the top singles player at Merrimack College, upset top seed Mike McCrillis of Kennebunkport, 6-3, 6-0, in the championship match. McCrillis is a former net star at Cheverus High School and Bentley College. Wilding lost only eight games on his march through the draw.

Other winners in the three-day event included Lissa von Brecht in women’s, Kevin Vincent and Kim Vincent in mixed doubles, Leo Scheidl in Men’s 35-and-over singles, and Glen Mayberry in Men’s 55-and-over singles.
