TURNER – For the 15th year, Androscoggin Bassmasters will host the Androscoggin River’s Gulf Island Pond open bass tournament from 8 a,m. to 4 p.m. on August 17.

All functions will take place at the Center Bridge Road State Launch. All boats should be in the water by the registration deadline of 7 a.m. The river will be off limits after midnight Wednesday, August 13 to anyone fishing in the tournament.

Registration is open to anyone who meets the eligibility requirements of the tournament.

A fee of $125 per two-person team will cover the tournament registration. There will also be a $10 optional lunker fee per boat with a 100 percent payback.

More than $7,000 in prizes are expected to be awarded to the top 15 teams, based on a 60-boat field. There is a 12-inch, seven-fish limit per team. Breakfast and lunch items will be available as well as a 50/50 raffle to benefit the L/A Junior Bassmasters junior angler club.

There is also a friendly inter-mill tournament of eight teams participating from both NewPage and Verso. Both paper mills hold a long history of exchanging the Paper Makers Challenge Trophy.

Tournament sponsors include NewPage Rumford Mill, Verso Paper Androscoggin Mill, Emerson Toyota of Auburn, Ken’s Yamaha of Norway, Northeast Fishing of Lewiston, and Nickerson’s Septic of Turner.

The generosity of sponsors and anglers over the years has helped contribute thousands of dollars in donations to the Children’s Miracle Network and the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
