PORTLAND – Sonny Noel of Raymond, one of the preeminent high school and collegiate umpires of his generation in the state, will be honored at a testimonial dinner at noon Sunday, Nov. 9 at Holiday Inn By The Bay.
In 1975, Noel was the first umpire from Maine to work the College World Series. He has been general chairman of the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame for more than 20 years. His friends have organized the dinner to recognize Noel’s enormous contributions in serving his country, his fellow veterans and the Maine baseball community and to publicly thank him for his years of tireless devotion to those causes.

Y-Biddy basketball registration continues
AUBURN – Registration is ongoing for the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA Biddy Basketball League. Pee Wee Division is for Grades 2-4, and the Junior Division is for fifth and sixth grade. Draft for the Junior Division is 9 a.m. Saturday, with the draft for Pee Wee at 9 a.m. Sunday. Cost is $40 for members and $60 for nonmembers. ‘Y’ offering lifeguard course
AUBURN – YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston is offering a Lifeguard Certification Course to be held on the following dates: October 30 and November 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 17, 18, and 19.
Combined classroom and pool time run about 6 to 10 p.m. each night. There are several prerequisites for this course, including a 300-yard swim, and participants must be at least age 15 before the end of the course.
Upon completion of the course, the lifeguarding/first aid certification are valid for three years, and the CPR expires after one year.
Course fee is $215, including course materials. Registration is now open, but class size is limited, so register today at the ‘Y,’ 62 Turner St. There also may be space for those needing to recertify in CPR, or LG/First Aid.

Auburn Rec skating instruction
AUBURN – Auburn Parks and Recreation will hold two sessions of skating instruction for ages 4 to adult this winter.
Session I will meet from Nov. 7 to Jan. 16, with Session II meeting Jan. 23 to March 27. Beginners meet each Friday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m, with advanced skaters from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Fee is $90 for residents, $110 for non-residents. Helmets are mandatory for all beginner skaters.

Ron Brown coaching clinic at EL
AUBURN – Edward Little High School will host a free MBR/Ron Brown basketball coaching clinic Wednesday, Nov. 5.
By offering clinics free to all youth coaches, the organization hopes to improve the fundamentals of youth basketball participants statewide.
All current or aspiring coaches are invited to the clinic, which will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the EL gymnasium. Featured speakers will be: Rita Maines (Brunswick girls coach) on offense, Mike Adams (EL Boys) on defense, Kelly LaFountain of Mt. Ararat on practice planning and Todd Hanson of Brunswick on communicating with parents, as well as motivational methods discussed by all coaches.
Field hockey club tryout

Winthrop ‘Y’ basketball
WINTHROP – The Winthrop Area YMCA will tip off its Youth Basketball program in November this year. The Y-Ball program is open to all boys and girls from pre-K to Grade 5. It will be held Saturdays at Winthrop Grade School.
Tip off will be Nov. 15 for K, 4K and Grade 1. Grade 1 meets from 9 to 11 a.m., with the younger group playing for one hour starting at 10 a.m.

Road races scheduled
AUGUSTA – Cony High School All Sports Boosters will host a pair of holiday road races to benefit Cony athletics.
The Capital City 5K Race/Walk and One-Mile Kids’ Fun Run is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 11. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the Fun Run at 9:30 and the 5K starting at 10.
Entry fee is $15 for the 5K or $8 for the fun run. The first 150 registrants will receive shirts.
The Gasping Gobbler 5K is set for Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27. Registration will run from 7 to 8:15 a.m. The race begins at 8:30. Entry fee is $15, with shirts to the first 100 registrants.
