HALLOWELL – The Lewiston Demons opened their 2008-09 Northern Middle School hockey season Sunday at Kennebec Ice Arena with a 4-2 victory over WinDale.
After a sluggish start with netminder Caleb Dostie making eight early saves, the Demons – 2007-08 league runner-up – opened the scoring midway through the opening period when Tanner Hubbard tipped in a shot from defenseman Kianna Turmenne for a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Cameron Boucher finished off a tic-tac-toe-play for a 2-0 Demons lead, with Eric Soucy and Shawn Gagnier picking up assists.
The lead ballooned to 3-0 early in the second period. Hubbard finished off a nice setup from Gagnier, with Cameron Marquis picking up an assist.
WinDale battled back with two second-period goals to pull within 3-2, but Soucy upped the advantage to 4-2 late in the period with Coleman Morency picking up an assist.
Behind the solid goaltending of Noah Hutchinson (15 saves), the Demons held WinDale scoreless in the third despite an 8-5 shot deficit.
Dostie, who played the first half of the game, didn’t allow a goal while stopping 11 shots.
The Demons return to action at 4:20 p.m. Sunday at KIA against Augusta.
