POLAND – Carroll Akers wishes to thank to the Lewiston and Auburn recreation departments upon his retirement after 52 years of organized baseball and softball.
Akers, 60, started his career during the heyday of town teams.
He began playing baseball in second grade, making the transition to softball in 1970. In addition to the rec departments, Akers thanked the sponsors and managers of Florian’s Market, Olympia Sports, Jones & Vining, Brewers Over-30 League and Meineke Muffler.
“My greatest supporters are my family,” said Akers, citing his wife, Marcia; son, Kyle; stepdaughters Dawn Beaule and Debra Humason-Fulgham and their families. “They make me feel like I’m 30 again when the umpire says, ‘Play ball!’ “
