SALEM, N.H. – Two local teams claimed victory in their divisions of the Cornucopia Cup tournament over the holiday weekend.

Lewiston Jr. Maineiacs Peewee Travel team defeated the Edgewood Hawks from Cranston, R.I., 3-1, to take the Peewee ‘B’ division title.

The Lewiston Jr. Maineiacs Bantam Travel team won all four of its preliminary-round games as well as the championship tilt in its division.

Bantams roll

In the first preliminary game, Lewiston Bantams defeated Salem, N.H., 10-1, with Luke Olehowski registering five goals. Eric Soucy scored two goals and one assist. Alex Gregoire and Jake Bergeron each notched a goal and an assist. Tanner Hubbard also chipped in a goal. Bobby St. Hilaire had three assists. Korey Mulherin, James Waldrin and Ivan Ramirez-Pulido each registered one assist.

Lewiston blanked Duxbury, Mass., 9-0, in the second round. Soucy had two goals and three assists. Olehowski and Gregoire each produced two goals, with Olehowski adding two assists. St. Hilaire, Brendan Pelletier and Greg Alexander rounded off the scoring. St. Hilaire tallied three assists, Bergeron two, and Hubbard, Alexander, Waldrin and Calvin Stewart one each.

Round three was a 7-2 victory over Wallingford, Mass. Gregoire picked up two goals and one assist. Hubbard had a goal and two assists. Waldrin added a goal and an assist, with Jordan Charest, Bergeron and Soucy finishing the scoring. St. Hilaire, Ramirez-Pulido, Stewart and Brendan Landry each pitched in an assist.

The semifinals were the most exciting match for the Jr. Maineiacs, with Lewiston eking out a 4-3 win over Burriville, R.I., on Waldrin’s goal with only two seconds remaining in regulation. Waldrin screeched up the right side and blasted a shot past the Burriville goalie to win the game as the clock wound down. Gregoire and Bergeron each added a goal and an assist. St. Hilaire scored the other tally, while Alexander and Soucy each added an assist.

Lewiston and Burriville also matched up in the final, with Lewiston’s Gregoire scoring the eventual game-winner only 13 seconds into the contest on a feed from Bergeron. Olehowski added a goal in Lewiston’s 2-0 victory, with assists going to Stewart and St. Hilaire. Noah Hutchinson started the game in net for the Jr. Maineiacs, with Evan Bourassa coming in to complete the shutout.

Each goalie gained two wins in the prelim action. Drew Olehowski also contributed to the team’s success.

The team is coached by Mike St. Hilaire and assistants David Gregoire and James Roy.

Lewiston, now 9-2 overall, returns to action this weekend with games Saturday at 4 p.m. against Capital District of Augusta, and Sunday on the road at Rockport.

Peewees get defensive

Edgewood entered the game undefeated but had trouble putting the puck past Lewiston goalie Caleb Dostie, who cut down more than 30 shots on goal.

With his team down 1-0, Cam Boucher scored the first Lewiston goal. Kyle Ullrich added a second goal with shot from the blue line.

In a effort to force a tie, Edgewood pulled its goalie with a little over a minute to go and played six-on-five until a penalty increased the ratio to six-against-four.But the Jr. Maineiacs held tough defensively and Boucher cleared the zone to Matt Keaney, who hit an empty Edgewood net to put the game out of reach.

Earlier in the day, the Lewiston team beat another undefeated team when it scored twice against Rhode Island’s Woonsocket North Stars, who could only muster a single score against Dostie.

The Lewiston Peewee team, which scored three goals against Woonsocket in earlier weekend play, was also the only team in the tournament to score against the North Stars. Boucher and Keaney each scored against Woonsocket with assists from teammates Ethan Cailler and Ullrich.
