ROLLINSFORD, N.H. (AP) – A mother had to smash through a locked door in Rollinsford, N.H., to find her toddler and escape their burning home after the youngster locked her in the basement.
Jodi McKenzie said her 2-year-old son locked the door behind her when she went into the basement to do laundry on Thursday.
She tried for 20 minutes to coax him to unlock the door, then smelled smoke. McKenzie said she grabbed a sledgehammer and smashed a hole in the door so she could reach through and unlock it.
Then she frantically crawled through smoke and flames to find the boy and get out of the house.
The home was destroyed and a family dog died.
Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
