BERLIN, N.H. (AP) – Firefighters in Berlin, N.H., used a record amount of water – 2.25 million gallons – to fight Saturday’s downtown fire.

The fire destroyed two, three-story buildings on Main Street.

The city on average uses about 800,000 gallons of water daily. Water Works Superintendent Roland Viens says the system was designed to handle a major event requiring a little over a million gallons of water in 4 hours.

To meet the demand, Water Works had the Ammonoosuc water plant pumping at full capacity and was pulling water from the Brown Farm well.
