BRIDGTON – The fourth-annual Winter Carnival Giant Round Robin Table Tennis Tournament was held Saturday at Bridgton Town Hall as part of the Mushers Bowl. The event was well attended with 22 participants in three classes of competition – Open A, B and C divisions, plus doubles. All matches were best-of-five games, and each contestant played every other person in his or her class.

Trophies were awarded to first- and second-place finishers in each class as well as gift certificates for the Peking Restaurant in North Conway, N.H.

John Govostes of Rome captured the ‘A’ division. Govostes is the current over-40 state champion. Second place went to Al Landry of Lewiston.

Mat Von Voght of Waterville took ‘B’ honors, with Jim Nason of Sebago second. Jacob Imes of Waterville topped the ‘C’ division ahead of Seamus Feider-Sullivan of Brownfield.

Govostes and Patti Prescott of Readfield won the doubles competition. Prescott is the current women’s state champion. Landry and Rick Shea, also of Lewiston, won second place in doubles.

The Maine Table Tennis League of Lewiston, Mike McClellan of the Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce and Phil Gutekunst of the Bridgton Rec Department assisted with the event along with Bill Grenier, Jim Nason and Cliff Walker.

Bridgton Town Hall hosts table tennis every Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. on its seven tables.

All people with a basic knowledge of the game are welcome to attend and bring a friend.
