AUBURN – The Central Maine Board of Approved Baseball Umpires (CMBABU) will be holding rules clinic for anyone interested in becoming a certified umpire.

The CMBABU covers Sagadahoc, Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties and parts of Cumberland county. Levels of play include high school, junior high school, American Legion, Babe Ruth, Senior Baseball (men’s league) and Cal Ripken. Veteran umpires are encouraged to attend as well to brush up on the rules.

The clinics will be held at 6 p.m. at Edward Little High School on Feb. 9 and 23 and March 2. The test will be given March 8. Sessions will last two hours. Rule books and case books will be made available at a cost of $8 each.If you are 17 years old or older and like baseball, this is a great way to stay involved in the game while getting paid. Typical game fees are $50 to $75.

Norway fishing derby set for Feb. 21-22

NORWAY – The Norway-Paris Fish & Game Association’s annual fishing derby is set for Feb. 21 and 22. This is a sunrise-to-sunset derby open to any Maine lake. All entries must be weighed in at the Little Red School House, Route 118, on Norway Lake. All juniors (12-and-under) who enter a fish win a prize. There also are prizes in the following categories: bass, togue, salmon, pickerel, brown trout, brook trout/splake. Tickets are available from club members, local sports shops and at Derby Headquarters. Cost of a ticket is $1 and enters you in the fishing derby as well as a chance to win several prizes.

During the derby, club members will be available at the school house with an ice auger to help participants drill holes in the ice. Hot dogs, hamburgers and homemade goodies will be on sale as well as club memberships ($30) and club cookbooks ($8). Proceeds from the annual derby are used to help the club send several local young people to the University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond for a week of fun and outdoors education. All are welcome to stop by for lunch and conversation anytime during derby hours.

GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine baseball staff will hold its 18th annual Pitching, Hitting & Defense clinics Sunday, feb. 22 and Sunday. March 1 at Costello Fieldhouse.
