LIVERMORE — A fire ripped through a combined office and garage building at the town’s transfer station early Friday morning.
The fire is believed to have been caused by some stove ashes that are collected in a metal container, and then at the end of the week dumped into a large roll-off container of trash to be hauled away, Livermore Fire Chief Don Castonguay said Friday.
The roll-off was adjacent to the building and the fire spread to it, he said.
Someone had smelled smoke and reported the fire at about 1:15 a.m., he said.
Firefighters arrived on the scene but had to wait until the gate to the transfer station could be unlocked to get in, he said.
The building that he estimated was 40 feet-by-20 feet was burned flat to the ground, Castonguay said.
