Mexico is facing difficult times. Population is declining, the mill is diminishing its work force and the state is decreasing its monetary support to the town. That should force elected officials to be careful about spending money. If not, taxes in Mexico will become unaffordable.
I’ve watched Mexico’s politics for almost 10 years, gone to selectmen meetings and attended budget committee meetings as a member. I support Byron Ouellette for a 3-year term as selectman. As a businessman and former budget committee chairman, he has invaluable experience.
For the 1-year seat, Betty Barrett has a thorough knowledge of town affairs. She understands the budget and personnel matters.
Another candidate for the 1-year seat is Andy Dupuis, a businessman and ex-selectman. If elected, he could solve the financial difficulties the town faces, such as repaying a $400,000 state loan for the technology center in Rumford.
