Clarification

A recent gripe in our B-Plus section of the Sunday newspaper complained about the billing practices of a local hospital, which charges a facility fee in addition to the charge for a doctor’s office visit. In fact, that billing practice is common among Maine hospitals. Sometimes the facility fee for a doctor’s visit is separated out on a bill, other times it is part of the charge but not separated out. For people on Medicare, the federal program requires hospitals to show the facility fee separately on its bill.
