BUCKFIELD — Mert Jones of Hartford was presented a certificate for more than 50 continuous years as a member of the American Legion by Post 58 Commander Timothy Cooper at a recent meeting.

The certificate, which was “issued in grateful appreciation for faithful and dedicated allegiance to the ideals of the American Legion,” was signed by National Commander David K. Rehbein and National Adjutant Daniel S. Wheeler.

Jones was again recognized at the Patriots Day celebration in Hartford. He was presented a flag that had been flown over the State Capitol and an accompanying certificate, courtesy of State Rep. Terry Hayes of Buckfield.

Jones served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 9, 1950, to Aug. 8, 1953. He served his first two years at Fort Rucker, Ala., in the 3461st Military Police and with the Prevost Marshal Investigations Division.

Jones was promoted to corporal in August 1951. He served in the 40th Signal Co., 40th Infantry Division, during the Korean War in 1953. He received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

Jones grew up living next door to the American Legion Post in Buckfield. In addition to serving as commander from 1960 to 1961, he served as adjutant for 12 years and he has served as service officer for the past four years, visiting members to see how they are doing and reporting on membership and sick call.

As a skilled carpenter, Jones has done a great deal of work on maintaining the post on Morrill Street in Buckfield.
