DEAR SUN SPOTS: Delta Kappa Gamma International is a professional honor society of women educators. The society promotes the professional and personal growth of members and excellence in education. DKG has chapters in every state and 14 other countries.
In Maine, Alpha Psi is our state organization, and Mu is the local chapter in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Mu provides scholarships to members who are working on degrees and to a senior from the area who is going to college to become an educator. The members also donate books to every child born in Twin City hospitals, with a pamphlet explaining how important it is to read to children from birth.
They also adopt several needy families as their Christmas project. Through the Clara Soule Committee, members donate a gift bag to former educators in all of the nursing homes in the surrounding area. Most of the society’s projects are funded through membership dues and by individual donations, but we also raise funds through our annual Teddy Bear Fair.
This year the fair will be held at the Lewiston High School gym on Saturday, Nov. 7. Members will offer home-baked cakes, breads and pies; candies; home-canned treats, including preserves and jellies; hand-made crafts such as knitted items; jewelry; and holiday crafts of all sorts. There is a white elephant table with all kinds of gently used items and a used book table, which also offers videos, CDs and DVDs.
There is a lunch counter; the Saturday night special offers baked beans, scones and brown bread, all homemade. The raffle table is offering a $50 gas card; $50 worth of lobster; an LL Bean Adirondack chair; a necklace, bracelet and earring set made with semi-precious stones; and a lovely hand-assembled machine sewn quilt, made by Linda Tremblay.
If you are interested in supporting some of your local educators and our community service projects, come by the high school on Nov. 7 and check out our tables. And if you are a key woman educator interested in finding out more about us or in possibly joining our society, come to the fair and meet us. – Jean Roy, Lewiston
