DEAR SUN SPOTS: We’d greatly appreciate your help to let Sun Journal readers know about an upcoming event at Norlands. On Saturday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Norlands Living History Center will be hosting the Children’s Hour, an interactive Christmas celebration.
Activities will include 19th-century parlor games, storytelling and holiday readings from the past, children’s hands-on activities and visiting the mansion to see simple decorations as the Washburns would have displayed them. Carolers will ask you to join them; Aunt Mary will offer you cookies and mulled cider. Kerck Kelsey, a Washburn descendant, will be telling the stories of the Washburn children who grew up in the 1800s in Livermore, and the school marm will be lining up the scholars for a spelling bee.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, visit our Web site, www.norlands.org, or call 897 4366. Thanks so much for a delightful and informative column. I often hear “Oh, I saw that in Sun Spots,” so I know how many other people also “turn there first.” — Nancey Drinkwine, volunteer coordinator
DEAR SUN SPOTS: In your Nov. 10 column, a gentleman was looking to donate used books. In addition to the places you suggested, I wanted to make you aware of another option. This summer I had the opportunity to be a part of a ministry that sends books to Africa and other places where they are greatly needed by missionaries as well as locals who are learning the English language.
The Edwin L. Hodges Ministry is based out of Decatur, Ala., and was started with the purpose of sending Bibles overseas. It has expanded to include other Christian literature, as well as textbooks, educational books, encyclopedias and children’s books — also greatly needed. For more information on the E.L.H. Ministry check out their Web site, www.elhm.org.
I would like to extend a thank-you to the Canton and Peru elementary schools and the Wilton Library for the many books they sent our way, to all the folks who donated school supplies (also needed) and to Hannaford in Jay for all those banana boxes! Because of their help, Jay Baptist Church members collected, sorted and packed more than 8,000 lbs of books this year, which were sent to Alabama to be shipped overseas.
As I continue to be a part of this outreach, anyone who has books to donate can e-mail gnpmitch@localnet.com or call: 897-3078. — Gina Mitchell, Jay
DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to Clem Clements in Lewiston, he may want to check with Artios Books at 180 Turner St. in Auburn (across from Dead River Co.). Artios buys, sells and trades used books. Not all books qualify for sale or trade; he would need to talk with them (the phone number is 786-4007), but it might be worth his while to check on it. I have traded many of my own books there. — Ellen Rowe, Auburn
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Auburn Lions Club and Volunteers of America are collecting items for local homeless teens. Items needed are: backpacks, socks, T-shirts, pens, pencils, shower soap, deodorant, towels, washcloths, three ring notebooks and canned goods. Donation boxes are located at RE/MAX River Cities, ERA Worden Realty, Ann’s Flower Shop and Great Falls Family Credit Union. For more information, call MaryAnn at 784-0159. Your help is greatly appreciated at this holiday season. —- Mary Ann Norcross, Auburn Lions Club
DEAR SUN SPOTS: This message is in reply to Chelsea Morin, who wrote to Sun Spots on Nov. 24. I am the former groomer at the Lewiston Kennel Shop. My departure from the Kennel Shop was a surprise to me, and I want Chelsea and any of my other beloved clients to know how to contact me. I am planning on opening my own groom shop as soon as I can and am encouraging people to call me and get on a waiting list. My number is 240-4796, and my e-mail address is katpastore@live.com. I miss all my fuzzy kids (clients). Thank you for your time. — Kate Pastore, Lewiston
