DEAR SUN SPOTS: I love your column, so loaded with information. While in Brunswick this summer, I noticed Grand City had closed. Is this just a sign of the times or did they move?

In Turner, on Allen Road, there was a “deer farm,” as it was called. Does it still exist?

Also, schools want soup labels. Do they need whole label or “points” part.

ANSWER: Sun Spots found the posting below, which referred to a story by the Times-Record on the closing of Grand City, but she couldn’t find the actual newspaper story online.

Posted at http://www.city-data.com/forum/maine/481231-grand-city-brunswick-closing.html:

“The Times Record did a story on the closing a few weeks ago; you might find it in their archives on line. The store is owned by the employees. They bought it when WT Grants closed their doors at Cooks Corner and changed the name back in the late ’70s.

“The economy being what it is right now made it tough going. I will miss their breakfast the most. Where else can you go and grab a couple eggs, home fries and toast for $2.89? The place was always spotless, the same waitresses have been there since Jesus was a boy. What I loved the most about the waitresses is they would feed the less-fortunate people from the downtown area out of their own pockets. The waitresses looked after them and made sure they got a good breakfast every morning and that they were all bundled up on a bitter cold morning.

“The downstairs sure had plenty of widgets. A lot of the elderly would shop downstairs for their fabric and patterns, pretty big size department. How many memeres bought their yarn there to go home and knit mittens only to donate them to the Santa Fund every year. Fond memories — Grand City will certainly be missed by the residents of downtown Brunswick.”

Sun Spots doesn’t know anything about the deer farm. Maybe readers can help.

As for the labels, Sun Spots went to www.labelsforeducation.com/rules.aspx. The rules make no reference to the entire label, only the UPC code. Most people probably find it easier to just rip off the whole label, but it doesn’t appear to be necessary.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For Doris, No Town, from the Nov. 20 column, here are instructions for net scrubbers. Use a K crochet hook. One yard of net makes three scrubbers.

Cut across width of net into 1½- to 2-inch wide strips. Tie six of these strips together with a square knot. Chain four. Connect with 25c in beginning loop to form a circle. sc twice in each stitch for two lengths of net (two of the knots). 5c once in each stitch to the last knot. This will be the end of the fifth strip. sc four more times. Decrease by sc in every other stitch. Finish by drawing through loop and stuff remaining net inside. — Irene, Turner

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I love your column and read it daily. I’m wondering if Sun Spots can find out when NASCAR is going to have its championship awards banquet and what channel it will be televised on. Thank you in advance. — Stumpy Spencer

ANSWER: Sun Spots is not very well-informed about car racing, but she found this posting on www.nascar.com dated Nov. 14, which leads her to believe the awards you wished to see may already be over.

“Five champions in NASCAR’s developmental series were honored during the inaugural Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala in the Concord (N.C.) Convention Center on Saturday night.

“The festivities featured the champions and top drivers from all of NASCAR’s North American regional touring series, who gathered for the special year-end celebration at the hub of stock-car racing.

“The 2009 champions included Ryan Truex (NASCAR Camping World Series East), Jason Bowles (NASCAR Camping World Series West), Donny Lia (NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour), George Brunnhoelzl III (NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour), and Andrew Ranger (NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1).”
