FAIRFIELD, Maine (AP) — Police in central Maine are crediting an 11-year-old girl with saving the day by taking control of the steering wheel after her father passed out while driving.
Police in Fairfield said 50-year-old Walter Hansen of Oakland became dizzy while driving on a local road last week.
Police Chief Steve Trahan told the Morning Sentinel that when Hansen lost consciousness, his daughter Laura took the wheel.
He said the girl steered the car clear of a truck after veering into the oncoming lane, then avoided hitting a stop sign, a maple tree and a house. The car came to rest in a flower bed in a yard.
Hansen said he didn’t know it at the time, but he had pneumonia which caused him to pass out.
