We would like to urge a “no” vote on the very hasty proposal by some of the Oxford County commissioners on the June 8 ballot. The initiative would allow the commissioners to appoint the county treasurer, rather than allowing the voters to continue to elect a person for that office every four years.
If the county commissioners truly think a change needs to be made, that change should be the result of a careful and thoughtful process involving the citizens, rather than a sudden and one-sided ballot initiative.
A treasurer appointed by the commissioners would be beholden to them for his/her job. A person who is elected is responsible to the voters.
