BANGOR, Maine (AP) — A former letter carrier who admitted swiping money from envelopes addressed to residents on his Maine mail route won’t be going to jail.

Fifty-six-year-old Lawrence Custis of Lincoln faced up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. But he was sentenced Thursday to three years of probation. He also was fined $1,250 and ordered to pay restitution.

Custis pleaded guilty to taking cash between December 2006 and early April 2007 from cards and letters. The Bangor Daily News says court documents indicate he stole $150 per week over the four-month period.
