PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A pair of Republicans vying for Maine’s two congressional seats face an uphill battle. But Dean Scontras and Jason Levesque are feeling emboldened by the turnout of conservatives and tea party sympathisers in the state’s primary elections this week.
Republicans turned out in force Tuesday for a conservative candidate for governor favored by tea partiers, Waterville Mayor Paul LePage.
Scontras says Mainers want fiscally responsible candidates because they’re more concerned than ever about out-of-control spending and deficit spending.
Scontras, of Eliot, is trying to unseat first-term Rep. Chellie Pingree. Levesque, of Auburn, is trying to oust Rep. Mike Michaud in the 2nd Congressional District.
