Officials of St. Mary’s Hospital are scrambling to find new positions for kitchen employees who face losing their jobs when the hospital merges its kitchen with that of d’Youville Pavilion nursing home.

Eighteen positions will be eliminated when the two dining facilities are merged in a cost-saving effort sometime this fall, according to St. Mary’s Vice President for Operations Elvin L. Schlegel Jr.

Schlegel said St. Mary’s will make every effort to help find new jobs for those who are laid off. He said the impact may not be as great as it appears because there are several vacancies in the departments caused by people retiring or finding other jobs.
