In preparation for a major hydroelectric plant at Lewiston Falls, Central Maine Power Co. has bought water rights owned by Bates Fabrics Inc. of Lewiston, and has reached an agreement to terminate leases Bates holds for generating capacity along the canal system.
The utility and textile firm announced the agreement in a joint statement issued Wednesday. The agreement calls for Bates to receive between $2.5 million and $3.5 million, depending on the start-up date of the $50-million, 25-megawatt Lewiston Falls hydro project.
The agreement is one of several CMP must make with parties affected by the proposed project before construction on the plant starts.
