BOWDOIN — The 46th Bowdoin International Music Festival comes to a close this week. After the the final Artists of Tomorrow concerts on Thursday and Friday and the season finale on Friday, students and faculty will pack their bags and their instruments to continue their careers and courses of study for another year.
The sixth and final Festival Fridays concert on Aug. 6 will feature accomplished pianist Edward Auer performing Chopin’s 24 Preludes and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61. Last year, Auer was a prize winner in the Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Marguerite Long competitions, and has recorded for RCA Japan, Toshiba EMI, Erato, Camerata, TownHall and other labels.
After intermission, the stage will be set for a full orchestra presentation of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Artistic Director Lewis Kaplan will conduct with Bowdoin virtuoso violinist Suyoen Kim as guest artist. A multiple-prize winner in numerous international competitions, Kim studied at the Academy of Music and Theater in Munich, and has performed in concert throughout Europe and Asia.
The Festival Friday concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Crooker Theater at Brunswick High School. Tickets are $35.
The festival’s Artists of Tomorrow series will conclude with concerts at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5; and at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, all in Studzinski Recital Hall on the Bowdoin campus. These concerts feature advanced students of classical music performing programs of traditional and contemporary solo and chamber music repertoire. Tickets: $10 suggested donation.
