MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont telecommunications company is getting $116 million in federal grants and loans to bring broadband internet service to underserved parts of the state.
The money from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the Springfield-based Vermont Telephone Co., is almost 10 percent of a $1.2 billion package for 126 projects in 38 states that was announced Wednesday by Secretary Tom Vilsack.
New Hampshire is getting $2.3 million and Maine is getting $9.4 million from the same package.
Vermont Telephone is planning to use the money in part to build a wireless internet system that could reach almost all Vermonters who cannot get broadband computer service. Of the total, $81 million grant is a stimulus grant and a $35 million loan.
