100 years ago, 1910
Lewiston will soon have six flaming arc lights. There are three already, at Hospital Square, Lisbon and Main streets and City Hall. Others will be placed at Lisbon and Ash streets, Chestnut and Lisbon and in the park. An enclosed arc is also to be placed at Pine and Lisbon streets. It is expected that the work at the lighting station will be completed today or tomorrow.
50 years ago, 1960
Miss Helene Murphy of 24 Garcelon St., one of Lewiston’s most popular teachers, is leaving her post to accept an assignment in Beirut, Lebanon.
Her resignation was presented to the Board of Education yesterday afternoon and it was accepted with regret. Miss Murphy, an American history instructor at Jordan School, has been with the Lewiston School Department for 31 years.
25 years ago 1985
An expansion of a Lewiston shoe firm was labeled “a breath of fresh air in a storm of disappointments,” by Rep. Olympia Snowe, who called for the establishment of quotas on foreign shoes, while at the same time praising the quality of American shoes.
In an unusual event for the troubled shoe industry, Down-East Casual Footwear held an open house Friday to celebrate its newly completed expansion. Down-East, owned by David and Michael Rancourt, has expanded three times since it was founded in 1982.
