NORWAY — Concern about pedestrian safety in the downtown crosswalks has prompted police Chief Robert Federico to purchase vertical signs that will be placed in Main Street crosswalks.

The action was initiated after a pedestrian was struck by a car on Main Street, but not seriously injured this summer.

“There’s a lot more activity on Main Street,” Federico told selectmen at their meeting Thursday, referring to people attempting to cross Main Street between cars that are parked along the sidewalk.

Federico said the department put barrels out on Main Street but they were not state approved so the department has moved toward the purchase of vertical panel signs which remind motorists to watch for pedestrians crossing in the crosswalk.

The signs will be paid for with drug forfeiture money and can be moved around to different crosswalks between the western corner of Main Street at Pikes Hill Road and the eastern end of downtown.

“We do want to keep them safe,” he said of pedestrians.

Federico said they have tried to enforce the jaywalking laws in an attempt to remind pedestrians to use the cross walks, but that has not always been successful.
