LEWISTON — Police are investigating a report of extensive vandalism at the 40-acre Riverside Cemetery off Summer Street.
According to a member of the Riverside Cemetery Association’s board of directors, about 150 gravestones were tipped over last night, among other damage. Some of the stones weigh more than 1,000 pounds and are 200 years old.
A visitor to the cemetery called the damage “heartbreaking.”
Because plot owners are responsible for each grave, the cemetery is not insured for this kind of vandalism. A groundskeeper estimated it could cost $30,000 to $40,000 to repair all the damage.
