WINDHAM — A Windham man is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail after being charged with murder Tuesday in connection with the death of another Windham man last week.

Joseph Green, 44, of 38 Roosevelt Trail, was charged with murder in the death of David Harmon, 40, also of Windham. Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police, said in a statement that Green was arrested about 7 p.m. Tuesday at his mother’s house in Casco.

Harmon’s body was found on Green’s property Aug. 31 at the base of an 8-foot ledge following a search by the Maine Warden Service, Windham Police Department and volunteers. Harmon was reported missing by his wife earlier that night. McCausland said the woman told authorities she dropped him off nearby earlier in the day to scout out hunting sites.

According to McCausland, authorities learned during their investigation that Harmon allegedly intended to steal marijuana growing on Green’s property. An autopsy by the state Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide after showing that Harmon died from a “through-and-through wound consistent with a gunshot.”

Detectives said Green and Harmon knew each other. McCausland said detectives interviewed Green several times and that he had been cooperative during the course of the investigation.

Police recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting. The gun and other items seized last week during a search of Green’s property have been taken to the State Police Crime Laboratory in Augusta for examination.

Green, a former heavy equipment operator, is being held at the Cumberland County Jail and will likely make his first appearance in Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland either Wednesday or Thursday.
