LEWISTON — Brunswick High School senior Allison Walton was sent back onto Don Roux Field on Saturday morning with a time limit and unspoken orders not to shoot.

So it was no surprise that Dragons coach Martyn Davison wielded a quick hook when Walton scored her fifth goal of the game, a one-timer so pretty it almost looked accidental.

“I can’t just leave you out there to keep scoring,” Davison said in an apologetic tone.

“It’s OK. I understand,” Walton replied. “I just couldn’t let that one go by.”

Not many opportunities escaped the reigning Class A champions in a 10-0 girls’ soccer rout of Lewiston.

Walton and Morgan Libby, who also scored a goal, amazingly are the only senior starters for Brunswick (3-0).

But the Dragons, who have appeared in six of the last 15 state finals, winning two, own a revolving door that is the envy of their Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference competition.

Sophomore midfielder Dakota Foster added two goals and three assists before Davison moved her to fullback in an effort to stop the onslaught.

Another sophomore, striker Rachel Moroney, and junior Cassandra Murano each scored a goal. Junior Becky Champagne dished out two assists, including the feed that gave Walton one for the thumb and ended her day with 16:43 left.

“We won last year, but we lost eight seniors,” said Walton, who scored her first two goals in a 13-second span.

“These girls all came up through the Seacoast program. There are a lot of strong teams out there. I think we have the potential, but it might be more of a reach than last year.”

Brunswick has outscored its first three opponents by a 20-0 margin.

This double-digit disparity might have been a tad deceiving in either direction. Surely it could have been worse if not for the Dragons’ late charity.

To Lewiston’s credit, however, it was only 2-0 until Walton completed her natural trick with 12:08 remaining in the first half. Brief injuries to defenders Jessica Bowen and Elizabeth Dixon, two of the Devils’ three senior starters, didn’t help matters.

Foster’s first goal just over a minute later made it a 4-0 halftime cushion.

“This was good,” said Libby. “We hadn’t been playing that well before today.”

Devils goalkeeper Mackenzie Masselli finished with 15 saves, including several sensational stops of Walton in the first half.

Shae Godbout and Marriah Carrier joined Bowen and Dixon with inspired early defense for Lewiston, which surrendered a total of only three goals in its first two losses to Morse and Erskine.
