Board: Sabattus Selectmen

Met: Tuesday night

Less than Pleasant

Issue: Pleasant Hill Road made the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments’ top road pick for future town repairs. Selectmen agreed with it.

The scoop: The road has dips and turns and it’s a popular shortcut to the turnpike. Working to straighten the road is a possibility.

Up next: The town would have to pay 10 percent of the project cost, but that cost wasn’t clear. Once an estimate is in hand, selectmen can decide whether to split the bill over two years or go for a single request in a warrant article.

Halt on town equipment

Issue: For a long time, the town has let residents borrow equipment such as a tow-behind grader, and members of the Fire Department have volunteered to clean people’s chimneys using town equipment.

The scoop: Concerns have been raised about the town’s liability if something goes wrong.

Up next: Town Manager Rick Bates is drafting a policy to cover those uses.

Seniors, police outreach

Issue: The General Assistance administrator has pulled together a list of senior citizen resources and created a packet. Information includes how to reach a free cell phone program, where to turn for heating assistance and food pantries. Packets will be available at the Town Office and the transfer station and from police officers.

Issue: The new Citizens Police Academy will kick off in October. People interested in signing up can pick up an application at the Town Office or Police Department until Sept. 30.
