The big boulder which for years has been a landmark at the corner of Sabattus Street and East Avenue was shattered Thursday with a charge of dynamite. It will go into the foundation of the new house which C. E. Hilton is building on the lot there.

50 years ago, 1960

A new 12,000-square-foot warehouse for the Dane-T-Bits Biscuit Co. Inc. is to be constructed on the Poland Road in Auburn, it was announced yesterday by Harry W. Woodard Jr., Auburn councilman and manager of the Auburn branch of the concern.

The company recently purchased three acres of land on the Poland Road from Stanley G. Snow and plans an immediate start on clearing the area of brush and scrub pine.

Dane-T-Bits, a large New England distributing concern, was organized in 1954.

25 years ago, 1985

The Maine Nuclear Regulatory Committee said Monday that five Androscoggin County communities — including Auburn, fourth largest city in Maine — “have been designated by the federal DOE as sites under consideration for a high-level nuclear waste dump.”

However, officials in all five communities said they had never heard the federal government was considering local nuclear dumps. The MNRC named Auburn, Durham, Mechanic Falls, Poland and Livermore Falls as sites being considered by the DOE for storage of spent fuel rods from nuclear power plants across the United States.
