LEWISTON — The popular language-learning software program “Rosetta Stone” is being offered free of charge at the Lewiston Public Library once again.

The program has training for all levels of English, Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic and Chinese. The new license allows the program to be used only on the library’s computers. Lewiston offered the software online to library card holders in 2007, until the company changed its licensing requirements.

“They just cut us off completely in 2008, and then they came back a year or so later with something we just couldn’t afford,” library Director Rick Speer said.

The program is available in the library’s computer lab and in the private study rooms to those with Lewiston library cards. Use in the computer lab is on a first-come basis from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The library has also established special nighttime lab hours for people wanting to use the language software from  5:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday.

Computers in the private study rooms are available by reservation at the reference desk.
