GREENWOOD — As its precursor to winter, the Mount Abram Family Ski Resort will host its annual Fall Fest 2010 on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9 and 10.

“This is a great weekend to celebrate autumn in western Maine as the leaf peeping will be at its peak color,” Kevin Rosenberg, marketing director, stated in a Monday report.

“Music, a Ski and Board Ski Swap, games and good times are on tap at Mount Abram this weekend.”

The festival begins at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Ski Club ski swap opens at that time for people to drop off equipment that will be sold from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Sports Haus will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday for those interested in getting fitted for seasonal rentals.

Other Saturday activities and events include pumpkin carving and painting at 3 p.m.; music from Billy McDaniel from 4 p.m. through the night; and an adult and children’s pumpkin tossing contest at 4:30 p.m.

At 5 p.m., a potluck of appetizers and snacks will be held with a prize for best chili and chowder, followed at an egg tossing contest at 5:15 p.m. and a pie eating contest at 6 p.m. with pies from Valley View Farm in Hebron.

From noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the resort’s Loose Boots Lounge will open for Sunday football.

“To keep with tradition, we do ask everyone attending the events to bring a potluck dish of appetizers or snacks to share,” Rosenberg said.

“We will be judging the chili and chowders, so bring that if you are ready for the challenge.”

In other Mt. Abram news, Rosenberg said that last week the resort started its new snowmaking project.

“For the 2010-11 season, we will be adding 55 HKD Tower Snowguns to the resort,” he said. “This project has started all from a grant we received from the National Ski Areas Association for this Sustainable Slopes Project.”

The upgrade will allow the resort to increase its energy efficiency by 66 percent from last year.

“The new technology also allows us to put more snow on the hill, recover from unwanted weather events, and resurface the conditions,” Rosenberg said.

Maine Drilling and Blasting has finished drilling and blasting the 55 new holes for the tower guns from Westside to Fearless Leader trail.
