TOPSHAM — The second day of Topsham’s best was as usual the winner in point of attendance and interest. Again, like the first day, there was excitement good and plenty. An accident in the morning, a smash up during the races, and another fistic encounter on the midway in the afternoon are a few of the happenings of a busy day at the Topsham track. In spite of the fierce winds, the sharp cold and the clouds of dust, the people were there in crowds and stayed until the last event had been pulled off.

50 years ago, 1960

A shelter, which is thought to be the only one of its kind in Maine built entirely for children waiting for a school bus has been erected for school children in the Maple Ridge area.

A group of fathers and residents from the Webster Street section got together one afternoon and put up the shelter in four hours. There is a bench inside so the children can sit while they are waiting.

25 years ago, 1985

The State Office of Energy Resources, the Maine Lung Association and Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute are co-sponsoring a free, drive-through auto emissions testing service at the Auburn Mall parking lot, Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

CMVTI automotive students will run state-of-the-art machines which analyze a car’s exhaust for the percentage of unburned gasoline and the percentage of carbon monoxide present.
