After each man had won a fall in last night’s match between Wilfred Barrette, the pride of the local French wrestling public, and John Kilonis, the Macedonian wrestler, and the men had wrestled 40 minutes without either getting the necessary fall to win, Acting City Marshal Cailler ordered the bout stopped at midnight and the match thus ended in a draw.

50 years ago, 1960

The Lewiston lodge of Elks will honor Twin City newspaper carriers during national Newspaper Week Oct. 18-21 by sponsoring an essay contest.

The contest will be based on answers to the question: “I am proud to be a newspaper boy because…” The essays will be in 50 words or less. Contest blanks will be completed and brought in or mailed to the circulation department of the Lewiston Sun-Journal. Entries will be judged on originality of thought and neatness.

25 years ago, 1985

Three Lewiston police officers were among the top 20 finishers Monday in the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s fifth annual “police pursuit” road race in Waterville.

Officer Ivan Boudreau, an 11-year member of the Lewiston Police Department, was the force’s top finisher in 13th place.

Right behind Boudreau were Officers Lawrence S. Brown and Marc A. Cloutier. Brown captured 14th place and Cloutier finished 15th.
