LEWISTON — Republicans are needed to work the city’s polls on Election Day, City Clerk Kathy Montejo said.

State law requires the city to have an equal number of Democrats and Republicans working at the polls as election clerks.

“We need to hire about 10 additional Republican election clerks,” Montejo said. “For this election, we have had several of our regular Republican election clerks who are unable to work at this year’s election due to either illness, travel or family situations.”

The election clerks are paid and training material is provided. There are two shifts available: 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. until the ballots are counted, which is usually around 9:30 p.m.

Workers are paid $50 per shift. Election clerks will check in voters on the incoming voters’ list, distribute ballots and monitor the voting machines, among other duties.

“Election Day is the single, largest, one-day event that the city coordinates,” Montejo said. “We need local citizens to dedicate their time to work at the polls, helping their friends, neighbors and fellow Lewiston residents with this important process.”

Interested residents are asked to contact the Clerk’s Office at 513-3124. Election worker application forms also are available on the city’s website at www.ci.lewiston.me.us.
