AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine election officials are expecting a big turnout as voters get ready to cast their ballots in the open race for governor and two congressional seats.
Republican Paul LePage has been leading the polls in the five-way race for governor, while independent Eliot Cutler and Democrat Libby Mitchell are hoping to overcome his edge on Election Day. Independents Shawn Moody and Kevin Scott are far behind.
While the candidates push to get out the vote, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap estimated Monday that 50-55 percent of Maine’s eligible voters will turn out. That’s about on a par with turnouts in open governors’ races, but not as high as in presidential years.
LePage and Cutler are planning rallies Monday night to wrap up their campaigns.
