PERU — A pond and dirt dam on Teela Lane does not need a permit, selectmen were advised at their meeting Monday night.
Last week, Selectmen Kathy Hussey and Rick Vaughn went with Colin Clark of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to inspect the site because abutter Wayne Moore was concerned that if the dam broke, it could flood his property.
Clark said no permit was needed because the pond is less than a half acre, Hussey said. She said Clark was surprised to see that it was not in a stream, as he had been told, and recommended a couple of catch basins farther down the hill.
Moore said his insurance will not cover damage from a man-made pond.
Resident Jim Pulsifer said the person who caused the damage could be liable and their insurance would have to pay.
In other news, the board voted to table a 2 percent raise for the road crew, as requested by Road Commissioner Joe Roach, because Vaughn is on the road crew and Hussey is his sister.
Roach said it had been two years since his crew had a raise and he would like it to be retroactive to Nov. 1. He also said the road crew would not be working on Veterans Day.
Hussey, who is filling out six months left on Corey Jacques’ term, is also secretary of the board. She moved to have the discussion tabled until a full board could be present.
Board Chairman Laurieann Milligan was absent.
According to Maine Municipal Association, siblings can serve on the board if they don’t live in the same house.
Town Clerk Vera Parent said that as long as Hussey was selectman she could not serve as deputy clerk.
Parent reported that the audit review is under way. The board has requested the auditor attend its next meeting on Monday, Nov. 22.
Hussey reported that the Worthley Pond Spring has been reopened after the test came back OK.
