PORTLAND — Maine’s largest city is getting some high-tech equipment to help pedestrians cross busy streets safely.
Federal funds are paying for a pedestrian detection system using stereo cameras which do not record people’s images at the curb of two busy intersections. They detect when a pedestrian is present and then activate the pedestrian signal automatically or help pedestrians activate the signal.
The system was being installed at the intersections of Park and Deering avenues and Franklin and Commercial streets. It should be especially helpful to the sight impaired.
Portland is one of six demonstration cities in the nation chosen for the technology.
