NEWRY — Just in time for Christmas, Sunday River Ski Resort announced late Tuesday that all eight of its peaks are now open for skiing and snowboarding.
The bulk of the snow was manmade and complements about 2 feet of natural snow that fell since the resort opened for the season earlier this fall, spokeswoman Darcy Morse said.
“It is a lot of snow-making,” she said. “There will probably be a little over 70 trails this weekend, depending on how much they do with snow-making.”
Another 5 or 6 inches is expected in snow showers and flurries prior to Christmas.
“We received 3 inches overnight and a couple inches here and there, so I think we’re close to 2 feet of snow since the season started, but no big major storms,” Morse said.
Still, being able to open White Cap; Locke and Barker mountains; South Ridge; Aurora, North and Spruce peaks; and Jordan Bowl the day before Christmas vacation starts in Maine schools was exciting, Morse said.
“It’s awesome, I mean for us ski-in, ski-out is a definite for both the Summit and the Jordan (hotels), and just being able to ski from White Heat to Lollapalooza regardless of where you’re staying at the mountain is still pretty incredible,” Morse said.
