CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine (AP) — A teenage boy has died at Sugarloaf Mountain Resort in Maine after skiing into an object off a black-diamond trail.
Sugarloaf Communications Manager Ethan Austin says the ski patrol responded to the scene and took the 16-year-old boy to the first aid clinic while performing CPR. The boy was pronounced dead at about noon Saturday.
The skier was the son of a Sugarloaf employee and a student at Carrabassett Valley Academy, a private ski and snowboard school at the base of the mountain. The resort would not provide the boy’s name.
Austin says the crash happened on the Hayburner trail, which is one of the resort’s most difficult.
The Carrabassett Valley Police Department is investigating. It is believed the boy was wearing a helmet.
